Zero Gravity – Effective Weightlessness
Astronauts, surprisingly, don’t talk much about zero gravity – they prefer to use the term ‘effective weightlessness‘. They mean effective in a specific, scientific way, but the first time I read the phrase I thought it meant ‘weightlessness that is effective’. So what’s the effect of weightlessness? Well, just look at the dictionary definition:
The absence of stress or strain resulting from contact with the ground/chair/bed/etc.
It seems to me that a zero gravity chair would make you feel weightless, and remove the stress and strain that your body was feeling. It would be effective in making you feel like a million dollars, like an angel on wings. I’ll take two, please!
But of course, it’s all science fiction, and such things don’t really exist. Wait, what? They do exist? Zero gravity massage chairs are growing in popularity? Tens of thousands of American homes already have them? What a time to be alive!
If you are looking for the best zero gravity massage chair for your home or office, you’ve come to the right place. These chairs won’t break the bank but they can be expensive, so you should do your research to extract as much value for money as possible. We can help – we’ve got a short guide to the technology involved and a list of the top-rated models for you to consider.
First, take a look at this attractive short animation we’ve prepared for your delectation:
What is zero gravity technology?
Anti-gravity technology was first developed by (no surprise) NASA, for astronauts. If you’ve seen an astronaut during take-off, zero gravity chairs mimic this exact position of our space travelers. In this reclined position, astronauts are able to withstand the increasing force of gravity during take-off.
In addition, in a study of the human body in space, measurements recorded by NASA scientists showed that the most relaxed and stress-free state of the body is when it is in a trunk-to-thigh angle of 128 degrees.
These findings and data were incorporated into massage chair technology so that today, we have massage chairs that can be reclined up to a point that your feet are on the same level or raised higher than your heart.
Zero gravity technology is one of the more exciting features in the massage chairs that are currently in the market.
Why is the zero gravity feature important?
If you’re reading this now, it means you’ve made up your mind that out of all the many features of massage chairs — roller tracks, heating, 3d technology, and so on — zero gravity is one of your top priorities.
As we’ve said before in our Top 10 list of Best Massage Chairs, choosing the best massage chair for you depends on your foremost needs. The zero gravity feature is specifically ideal for people suffering from:
- a bad back
- spinal conditions
- cervical spondylosis (neck arthritis)
- arthritis of the knees
- heart problems
- varicose veins
- and other similar diseases that are compounded by gravity and body weight
One other REALLY compelling reason that has people opting for massage chairs with the zero-G feature is the testimony of users that it’s just like “floating on a cloud” or “gently drifting in the ocean”. For folks who are dealing with a lot of stress, these relaxing massage chair sessions are a much-needed respite.
We’ve made a shortlist of our favorite models based on brand, features, comfort and user feedback.
The 5 Best Zero Gravity Massage Chairs for 2017
BestMassage EC-06 ($)
The BestMassage EC-06 is the most popular massage chair on Amazon. Because of the number of sales and positive feedback and reviews, it made it to our Top 10 List of Best Massage Chairs overall. We’d have to say though that its very affordable price is a HUGE factor to the high number of purchases.
The BestMassage EC-06 is one of the most affordable zero gravity chairs you can find. It’s also got other features that you would normally find in higher-end chairs like 4 preset auto programs, 4 massage functions (rolling, kneading, chop, and compression/percussion), heat therapy for the lower back and feet, and a 1 year limited warranty on all parts.
The zero gravity feature coupled with the shiatsu massage means a blissful experience. As one reviewer says, “It feels like paradise.”
Full disclosure. There have been a number of complaints regarding this chair breaking and having no support for replacement parts. Averaging out the scores though, this product still gets 9 out of 10. We recommend checking the warranty and getting a guarantee for after-sales support before purchase.
Human Touch PC-300 Perfect Chair ($)
Human Touch is a brand we love here at Complete Home Spa. They’re compact little chairs with great performance and an even better price point. Human Touch chairs have been known to last for years and years and years!
So for the brand to name one of its models as their Perfect Chair speaks a lot about the quality of the Human Touch PC-300.
Unlike other zero gravity massage chairs, the Human Touch PC-300 Perfect Chair is very compact and stylish. It’s a real space saver and is about the size of a rocking chair (or smaller). The base is made of walnut wood and the upholstery has a leather look.
The patented ergonomic design with built-in lumbar curve is also a huge plus as it provides all the benefits of zero-g chairs.
The Perfect Chair is more a recliner than a real electric massage chair. It does not have the preset auto programs and massage functions that a true electronic massage chair has. Its more sophisticated and feature-rich brother is the Human Touch ZeroG 5.0 Massage Chair.
The ZeroG 5.0 has a smart 3D flex glide massage engine that mimics the massages of professional massage therapists. Once you’re reclined to zero gravity, all you need to do is to point where you need relief on the ZeroG 5.0’s body map remote. Easy peasy!
Osaki OS-4000T Massage Chair ($$$)
The Osaki OS-4000T Massage Chair is an upgrade of the very popular Osaki OS-4000. Foot massage rollers have been added and the airbag system streamlined. This massage chair comes from Osaki, one of the most reputable massage chair makers in the industry.
The Osaki OS-4000T is a mid-range massage chair that has similar features to more expensive models. Aside from the zero-G design, it’s also got an S-track, six auto massage programs (in addition to the manual programs), six massage styles, heat and vibration, and a variety of speeds and intensities. It’s real value for money.
This chair best fits people with heights beteween 5’2″ and 6’3. If you’re shorter or taller than this, you will not fit the chair well and won’t get the optimized massage that this chair can give.
Kahuna LM6800 ($$)
As per our review, the Kahuna LM6800 is an awesome buy for the budget shopper. This means that not only do you get the zero-gravity feature in your chair, you’re guaranteed an overall great massage chair. The Kahuna range is manufactured by AJX.LLC who are one of the leading suppliers in the US.
Aside from the zero-G technology, it features L-track rollers. This is an excellent feature for those who need massages (and pain management) for their lower back and hamstring areas. It’s also got a unique yoga program, arm/foot/calf massages, heat therapy for the lower back and calves, and body scan technology. Not bad for the affordable price.
If there’s anything bad to say about the Kahuna LM6800, it’s that the foot rollers are a bit rough on the massage. The fix is very easy to do though. It’s just a matter of stuffing the lining with the packing foam.
iRobotics i7 Zero Gravity Massage Chair
We’ve saved the best (and the most expensive) for last. The adage “You get what you pay for” is especially true for the iRobotics i7 Zero Gravity Massage Chair. The iRobotics i7 has the distinction of being the first ever robotic massage chair completely designed and assembled in the US by Luraco.
This chair has all the bells and whistles that all the good massage chairs have. Apart from its zero-G technology, it uses Japanese and Swedish massage techniques. There are different modes for morning, night, health care, and also deep tissue.
If you’re looking for either pain management or just blissful relaxation, this chair does everything extremely well. And the customer support is also excellent. It’s US-based and you get to talk to a real live person on the other end.
And that’s not all! Your height and weight are not an issue with the iRobotics i7 Zero Gravity Massage Chair. The height and legs are fully adjustable for any size.
We want to mention the genuine leather and the noise reduction technology but we simply don’t have the space.
The only con is the price. If it’s out of your budget, there are some very good massage chairs for only around $800 like the iJoy-2580 or $500 like the iJoy Active 2.0. They’re without the plethora of features that the iRobotics i7 has though – it is truly the stand-out zero gravity massage chair of 2016.
