If there are three things the Japanese make well, it’s fish-based delicacies, robots, and massage chairs. The Inada Sogno Dreamwave is one of the best-known chairs in Japan, and we’re here to let you know whether it’s a Pokemon Go or a Pokemon No.

Executive Summary

The Inada Sogno Dreamwave is one of the most expensive massage chairs on general sale. As such, it’s packed with features. It has industry-leading body coverage and flexible programming to suit any age. It’s an ideal choice for people having trouble sleeping and those who simply want to have a relaxing time.

But if you’re the type of person who prefers deep and vigorous massages, you might be underwhelmed by the Dreamwave’s back massage. The remote control is also a disappointment. Fortunately, there’s a newer model which includes back heating and more pre-programmed massage options. More on that later.

Personalized Massage Experience

With the Optical Shiatsu Point Locator, the Sogno Dreamwave will do an infrared sensor scan of your body to detect your Shiatsu points. Once it’s able to create your Shiatsu map, it will compare it with the 106 body profiles saved in its system. From there, the product can suggest the best massage perfect for your body type.

Fantastic Dreamwave Technology

The Dreamwave Plus technology is unique to the Inada brand and when its makers first came out with it, it was the first of its kind. What does it exactly do?

The Inada’s Dreamwave technology mimics the chiropractic adjustment you can get from such a specialist. What this technology specifically does is to inflate the seat and hip area as you are shifted from side to side. This movement mimics hip rotations for the lower back.

If you have back and spine problems that can benefit from such a treatment from a doctor, then the Inada Sogno Dreamwave is a boon. The Dreamwave Technology is ideal for people suffering from lower back pain, herniated disk, and so on. Even if you’re in such pain that you can’t do these movements on your own, the Dreamwave Technology gently shifts your body to the position that you normally can’t assume. It’s all passive. The chair does it all for you.

Aside from the fantastic therapeutic benefit, an added bonus is that this program is very soothing and very relaxing.

Full Arm and Side Massages

While most massage chairs focus on the back, hip and neck area, the Sogno Dreamwave has an added feature that can target your arm down to your fingertips as well as the sides of your buttocks. There are 101 air cells in the product that inflate and deflate at very precise times to provide pressure in the said areas.

And if that’s not enough, this massage chair is also packed with 13 powerful rollers that reach up to the base of your head and down to your hips.

Overall, its number of air cells and roller construction is over and beyond what most massage chairs offer.

Really effective IlioTibial Band (ITB) Massage

The Sogno Dreamwave has the best massage for the IlioTibial Bands for the outside of your thighs. If your muscles are tender from back, hip, and knee problems (typical problems of old folks or athletes), the ITB massage on the Sogno is said to be the only massage chair that does it with real effectiveness.

Quality Materials and Design

The Inada Sogno Dreamwave is more than just a pretty chair with excellent color choices. It’s durable, too, as can be expected of Japanese brands. Its synthetic leather material isn’t only soil-resistant, but it even has an anti-bacterial property.

At the time that this chair was introduced to the market, the chair design had never been seen before. It is an award-winning design by Toshiyuki Kita, a world-class Japanese designer. Nowadays there are many other massage chairs with the Sogno’s design but we just wanted to let you know that the Inada Sogno started it all.

Broad Massage Coverage

With a coverage of over 1,200-square inches, this chair can support your entire body for a comprehensive massage. It can make you feel as if you’re being cradled while relaxing. This is probably the broadest coverage you can get from any massage chair.

Cons

The Session Timer Can’t Be Adjusted

Depending on the infrared scan done on your body, the Inada Sogno Dreamwave will program a session that can last from 15-20 minutes in length. In case this is not enough for you and want a longer session, sadly, you can’t get around it.

The good news is that even though this is not customizable, you can simply push the program button again to start you up again. The Inada Sogno doesn’t go back to its parked position so the transition is easy.

Doesn’t Come Fully Assembled

The chair won’t come with its arm and foot units attached, so you need to do a bit of work to get it up and running. Having said that, the instructions are almost foolproof and assembly can take 20 minutes or less, depending on your skills. The package already comes with a tee wrench.

The chair weighs a little less than 300 lbs. Before you assemble it, it’s a good idea to find a good spot for it first since it’s quite heavy to move around the house.

Clunky Remote

Despite the brand’s commitment to using modern technology in their products, the remote in this massage chair is far from that vision. It’s outdated and doesn’t really match the complexity of the machine. For one, it’s not backlit, which makes it almost impossible to use in dark rooms. Its scroll speed is slow, too.

Expensive

The Inada Sogno Dreamwave is one of the priciest products on general sale. There are other premium massage chairs on the market that are actually cheaper than the Inada Sogno, however, we’d have to say that the Inada Sogno outstrips them on many fronts. So yes, it’s definitely expensive, but you’ll be getting a great investment out of it.

If there’s any other chair that beats it, we’d have to say that, funnily enough, it’s the…

Newer Model

Before buying this product, it’s a good idea to double check what you’ll be purchasing. Inada has two models for its Dreamwave massage chairs: the Inada Sogno Dreamwave (this product) and the Inada Dreamwave.

The newer model has more pre-programmed sessions at 16. The Inada Sogno Dreamwave in this review only has 8. The newer Dreamwave also comes with back and seat heating for increased comfort and pain relief. It has been redesigned and fixed to increase user experience. Of course, all of these extra features and more come with a higher price tag than the old model.

Conclusion

We found this chair very flexible, enjoyed the personalized massage experience, and we liked the colors. Overall, the Inada Sogno Dreamwave is a fantastic chair, if you can manage the cost.

If you’re interested in buying the Sogno Dreamwave, we’d strongly recommend paying the few hundred dollars more to get the newer version.
